The world has become a global village due to information technology. It means that people living in the world known one another as if they are living in a village. It has become possible due to fast communication links. Information can be transferred from one place to another place easily and quickly.
Information palys an important role in every field of life. Information can be used to improve the standard of life. It can also be used for solving different problems. For example, if a person has the latest information about the medical field, he can use this information to cure different diseases.
Information technology has enabled different types of institutions and organizations to be a part of digital convergence. The digital convergence means that various industries have merged electronically to exchange information. This merging is very important in the modern world. The information can be transferred in various forms such as  text, photos, audio and video etc.


Components of Information Technology:


Three components of information technology are as follows:


Computers:


Electronic system that can be instructed to accept, process, store and present data and information.


Communication Networks:


It is an interconnection of different locations through a medium that allows people to send and receive information. Communication Networks allows people and businesses to interact. It includes hardware, programs and information. Information technology has become revolutionary the use of Communication Networks. Information can be transferred from one place to another easily and quickly.


Know-how:


Know-how is the capability to do something properly. Information technology know-how includes the familiarity with the tools of information technology including the Internet as well as the skills needed to use these tools. It also includes the understanding of using IT (Information Technology) for problem-solving and creating opportunities.

Ans. A series of steps used to convert data into meaningful information is known as information processing cycle. The steps in this cycle are performed in a specific squence.
        Different steps in the information processing cycle are as follows:


Input:


The first step of the information processing cycle is input. The Computer accept data in this step. Data consists of raw facts and figures. Data is entered into the Computer for processing. It is entered using different input devices such as Keyboard and Mouse.


Processing:


The second step of the information processing cycle is processing. It converts data into information. Information is an organized and processed form of data. The central processing unit processes data into information. Random Access Memory (RAM) temporarily stores programs and data required by the CPU (The Central Processing Unit)


Output:


The third step of the information processing cycle is output. The results are provided to the user in this step. It is performed using different output devices such as monitors and printers.


Storage:


The fourth step of the information processing cycle is storage. It stores data, information and programs used by the Computer system, It is performed using different storage devices like hard disk drives, CD, DVD, and USB flash memory etc.

Data:


A Collection if raw facts and figures is called data. The word raw means that the facts have not been processed to get their exact meaning. Data is given to the Computer for processing. Data is collected from different sources. It is collected for different purposes. Data may consist of Numbers, Characters, Symbols or Pictures etc.


Examples of Data:


Some example of data are as follows



  • Student fill an admission form when they get admission in college. The form consists of raw facts about the students. These raw facts are student's name, father name, address etc. The purpose of collecting this data is to maintain the records of the students during their study period in the college.
  • Governments collect the data of all citizens of the country during the census. This data is stored permanently and is used for different purposes at different times,
  • Different organizations conduct surveys to know the opinion of the people about their products. In these surveys, people express their ideas and opinions about different issues. These ideas and opinions of the people are stored as data. The organizations use this data for the improvements of their products etc.



Information:


The processed data is called information. Information is an organized and processed form of data. It is more meaningful than data and is used for making decisions. Data is used as input for the processing and information is the output of this processing. This information can be used again in some other processing and will be considered as data in that processing.
For example, the marks of a student in different subjects is data. This data is used to calculate the total marks which is the information, The total marks can be processed again to calculate the average marks of a student. In this processing, total marks is used as data and average marks is the information.


Examples of Information:


Some examples of information is as follows:



  • In Colleges and Universities, the raw facts about students are stored on admission forms. If we want to find out a list of all students who live in New York, we will apply some processing on this data. This processing will give us the desired list. This list is a form of processed data and will be called information.
  • The stored data in the census is used to generate different type of information. For example, Government can use it to find the total number of graduates, or literacy rate in the country etc. The information is obtained by processing the data. Government can use the information in important decisions to improve literacy rate.
  • An organization can use the opinion of the people as data and process it to generate information of its interests. For example, it can know that how many people of the country are satisfied with the quality of its product and how many are unsatisfied. The organization can use this information for the improvement of its products.

Software and Hardware:

A set of instructions given to the computer to solve a problem is called software. Software is also called program, Different software are used to solve different problems. A computer works according to the instructions written in software.
The physical parts of the Computer are called hardware. The user can see and touch the hardware. Keyboard and Mouse are two example of hardware.


Relationship of Software and Hardware:


Software is a set of instructions that tells the Computer hardware what to do? The hardware cannot perform any task without software. The Software cannot be executed without Hardware. A Computer becomes useful when hardware and software are combined.


Difference between Software and Hardware:


Software:


  • Software is a set of instructions that tell a Computer exactly what to do.
  • Software cannot be executed without Hardware.
  • Software cannot be touched,
  • Software is debugged in case of problem.
  • Software is re-installed if the problem is not solved.


Hardware:


  • Hardware is the physical parts of the Computer that cause processing of data.
  • Hardware cannot perform any task without software.
  • Hardware can be seen and touched.
  • Hardware is repaired in case of problem.
  • Hardware is replaced if problem is not solved.

Computer:

Computer is an Electronic Machine used to solve different problems according to a set of instructions given to it. A Computer can accept data, process data into useful information and store it for later use.
The word Computer is derived from Compute that means to calculate. Computer can be used as a Calculating Machine to produce results at a very high speed. However, the Calculation is not the only use of Computer. It can be used for different purposes, People use computers to solve different problems quickly and easily. It has changed the way of life.
Computers are available in different shapes and sizes, A common type of Computer System is as follows:

Computer Literacy:


The term Computer literacy refers to the knowledge and undertaking of Computer and its Uses. A person is Computer Literate if he understands Computer and its application.

Characteristics of Computer:

The Important characteristic of a computer are as follows:

1. Speed:

Computer process data at a very high speed. It is much faster than human beings. A Computer can perform billions of calculation in a second. Computer speed is measured in Mega Hertz (MHZ) or Giga Hertz (GHZ). For example, the process of multiplying 750 and 927 can take one or two minutes if it is performed by human beings. However, A Computer can perform millions of such calculations within a second.

2. Reliability:

Computer is very reliable. The Electronic Components in modern Computer really break or fail.

3. Accuracy:

Accuracy means that the Computer provides results without any errors. Computer can process large amounts of data and produce results accurately. The result can be wrong only if the data given to the Computer is not correct. Suppose the average marks of a class are required, there can be a chance of a mistake in the result if it is performed by human beings. However, a Computer can produce this result very accurately and quickly.

4. Storage:

Computer can store  a large amount of data permanently. People can use this data at any time. The user can store any type of data in the computer. The storage capacity of computer is increasing rapidly. A Computer can store millions of books easily.

5. Versatility:

Computer is a versatile machine, It can perform different types of tasks. That is why it is being used in every field of life. Computer is used in hospital, bank. office and at home. A user can play games, listen to music, watch movies and used the internet using a Computer.

6. Consistency:

Computer works in a consistent way, It does not lose concentration due to heavy work, It does not become tired or bored. Computer performs all jobs with equal attention.

7. Communication:

Most Computers today have the capability of communicating with other computers. We connect two or more computers by a communication device such as modem. These computers can share data, instructions and information. The connected Computers are called Network. You can communicate with other people in the world using network like Internet.

8. Recalling:

A Computer can recall the stored data and information as and when required. The data stored in the Computer can be used at a letter time. The Computer can recall the required data in a few seconds.

9. Control Sequence:

A Computer works strictly according to the given instruction. It follows the same sequence of execution that is given in a program.

10. Cost Reductions:

We can perform a difficult task in less time and less cost. For example, you may have to hire many people to handle an office, while the same work can be performed by a single person with the help of a Computer. It reduces the cost.
